Useful links for Jamaican Genealogy

I have found the following very useful for Jamaican genealogy:

1. - well worth the subscription fee. The Jamaica Gleaner from 1834 is available and fully searchable. It has been a treasure trove.

It is possible to request that acquire other papers, which I have done. The Jamaica National Library site has a list of eighteenth and nineteenth century newspapers that they have in their collection (including papers from all over the Caribbean), so I used that list to make my requests. I assume that the more people that make requests, the more likely they will try to acquire the papers.

4. If you are just getting going, have a look at The coordinator, Madeleine Mitchell, has a lot of very useful information on where to look and how to get started. She's got a great little book called "Jamaican Ancestry: How to find out More". It is available at
