[Jamaica] Jewish Cemetery Restoration - Phase 1

Postby bimjim » Tue Jan 19, 2016 2:01 am

Dear Friends,

Please see the attached Power Point presentation which speaks to the beginning of the restoration of this old cemetery which is located in Spanish Town, the then capital of Jamaica from 1539 until 1872.

We started cemetery restoration and cataloguing with the cleaning up of the Hunt's Bay Cemetery 9 years ago. This, the oldest Jewish cemetery in Jamaica, served the Jews who first settled in Port Royal after the capture of the island by the English in 1655-58. The earliest graves date from 1672.

We have almost completed the revised cataloguing of all the Jewish graves in the remaining 12 Jewish cemeteries island-wide. This has been undertaken with volunteers, headed by Rachel Frankel, through the Caribbean Volunteers Expedition program. We have 15 volunteers working as of today on two cemeteries, Orange Street and Elletson Road.

The White Church Street Cemetery will be catalogued next year. This will be undertaken on completion of its restoration. We will update you on this project from time to time.

Please feel free to share this presentation if you so wish. We are open to your comments or questions. If you do not wish to be sent this updated report, please advise.

Of further interest, is the expected digitization of all these records which we hope will begin shortly.
