GILZEAN - Jamaica

Post by Braes of Dalziel » Fri Dec 30, 2011 3:03 pm

GILZEAN, Jamaica, St Thomas in the East.

Forename Alexander. Born1770 (or possibly 1777) Urquhart, Morayshire, died 1849 Charlestoun of Aberlour.

Arrived in Jamaica c 1796. Left island possibly in early 1840s. Latterly at Dunvegan, St Thomas in the East.

Any information at all welcome. Will exists and I have accessed it. I have a notion of his role as plantation attorney in the 1820s, but very little before then.

May also have had kin in the island in 1820s, possibly including a Thomas Gilzean. Left offspring in Jamaica.

Braes of Dalziel.

I believe Alexander was my 3 x great grandfather. His oldest son Thomas, born 1811, moved to Edinburgh and appears in Edinburgh in the 1851 census as "mulatto" , born St Thomas in the Vale, Jamaica. He worked as a tailor/clothier in Edinburgh.
I was born Laurie Gilzean in Edinbugh 1950.

I would be interested in any information about Sarah Gilzean, born 1788?, mother of Alexander's 5 children.

There is a biography of Alexander on the UCL [University College London] website: www.
