Educated Edinburgh University; 1863: entered Lincoln's Inn 18.11.1863 aged 27 yrs; 1866 - 6 June - admtd English Bar; 1867 - February - arrived Melbourne, Australia; 1867 - 8 July - admtd Supreme Court in the colony of Victoria; 1869: est himself in legal practice at Ballarat, Victoria; 1892: working as Crown Prosecutor, Melbourne; 1909: died at Camberwell, Melbourne. Bachelor - no known issue.

Royal Arch Chapter, Yarrowee [Ballarat]; also past-president of the Ballarat Cricket Club and Ballarat Football Club; member of Yorick Club, Melbourne.

Described as: '...a fairly tall substantially built man, of very dark complexion, curly hair (Robert Gay - 1935).'
