Anyone related to or has family history on the late Cecil MAHON former owner of Lower Birneys and Pegwell Plantations in Barbados. Cecil Mahon was my maternal grandfather.

He was the father of my mother, Ione Gaskin who currently lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and will be 100 years old on May 1st, 2014. Ione Gaskin's mother, Louise Gaskin, worked as a domestic servant at Lower Birneys Plantation prior to emigrating to New York in 1916

Not directly on point, but .... My great-grand-father John Ashby Bentham was, at his death in November of 1889, described as a planter at Pegwell. Family lore has it that his wife was not able to get in the crop and so lost the plantation. Where was Pegwell?

Pegwell is now a residential area 3/4 mile directly east of the Oistins Market (which is on the south coast).

Hello again :)

From my understanding Pegwell is located on the parish of Christ Church. Please see the link below to Creole Links. I just received this information from 2 cousins of mine this weekend, which was very exciting!

*** Notice when you scroll down the list, our family name ‘Mahon’ matches Pegwell Plantation information*** ... names.html

However, how can we receive the actual records of Pegwell Plantation activity to connect more of the puzzle pieces together? For example, similar to the records we have today such as, marriages, births, deaths, occupations, relatives and relative relations, African, Irish, and Scottish records, church activities, and so forth...

God bless…

W.E. Mahon acquired Pegwell about 1898, probably from the estate of the previous owner.
W.T. Mahon had the title about two years later and held same until about 1907, when passed to C.C. Mahon.
It was sold off (?) in 1937.
This means my ancestor John Ashby Bentham's occupational listing as "planter" in 1889 must have meant "overseer".
I copied the above from the records at the Library of the Barbados Museum, courtesy of the Librarian Harriet Pierce.

The Queree papers at the Archives are really good on historical land ownership.

Pegwell was originally known as Elridge.

Here is what they have on Elridge

Eldridge – Pegwell, Christ Church – NE of Almshouse
1674 Hooper
1680 Crispine Hooper, 100 ac
1721 Beckles
1727 84/22 Hon. Thomas Beckles of Christ Church marrying Margaret Ince, widow. The pltn of Thomas Beckles, 113 ac, Christ Church, 74 slaves
Bounders: Hon. Joseph Pilgrim, Pilgrim Place?, Thomas Haselwood, Henry Baynes, Patrick Mayers, Elizabeth Nurse, widow, Edward Chiles, dec’d, Elizabeth Jerratt widow, Jonathan Hooper, Joseph Hole, Richard Adams, Griffin Eldridge, The Church Yard, The sea

1820 Robert Boucher Clarke, Snr.
1825 Robert B. Clarke
1842–59 Mrs. Elizabeth Clarke (’49 dec’d) 130
1860 Wm. Jas. Reece jnr 130

Shilstone xxii 76 (___)
1874 Shilstone xxii 99 – John Hinkson to James Hinkson £11,000

Thereafter I assume Elridge became known as Pegwell.

PEGWELL, Christ Church – see Eldridge?
1879–92 James Hinkson 182
1891–3 Chancery Court Hinkson v Hinkson et al
1898–05 W.E. Mahon 182
1907–21 W.T. Mahon (182 in ’07) 130
1929–37 C.C. Mahon (248 in ’29, 113 in ’37) 115
1829 Extra from Enterprise?

In 1928 my grandfather bought a 1/2 acre from CC Mahon when he was selling out lots at Pegwell.

John Ashby Bentham was the son of John Lewis Bentham who owned Goodland Plantation in the 1850's. He was also my great grand mother's uncle!!

Do your sources know when Bentham acquired Goodland?
