Tracing family roots and origin - all help is welcome
I suspect the family may be French in origin/roots.
My Grand Mother was Ruthann Deslandes, she came from a area called Foxes River or Brandon Gate,St Andrew and married a Walton/Walter Barnes. Ruthann's Father was a Etelthred Deslandes- Foxes River(spelling could be wrong)and her mother was M Bryan(I think ?)

Recently,I met someone in Jamaica with the surname-Deslandes.It made me think--I am from Trinidad and my mother's .maiden name was DeLande.Do you think one could be a variation of the other?

Hi Sherri,

It has been noted the "Delande" could be and perhaps is a variant of the name "deslandes".

The name is french in orgin and like many others things over time it is changed.

Did you get any info from the person you met in JA about their Surname in relations to your mother' s maiden name.

More importantly, does your mother have any roots in JA/ If she does not, I do not think there is any possible relation.

I have been able to track my "Deslandes" connection to the 1800s have roots in St Andrew,JA

As far as I know,I don't think we have roots in Jamaica.I still feel though that somewhere along the line,De Lande and Deslandes are related.
