Slave Compensation Claims - Barbados and Antigua

When slaves were freed by the 1833 Emancipation Act the owners of those slaves were paid compensation by the British government. This applied to the British colonies in the Caribbean, Bermuda, Belize, Guyana, Mauritius and Cape Colony (South Africa).

This website currently lists all those compensated for slaves in Antigua and Barbados. It is searchable by surname and the following information is given: claim number, number of slaves compensated for and the amount of money received in compensation.

Some claimants made more than one claim and some claimed jointly with other people. Those compensated were not always the slave owners (e.g. creditors, trustees) and where this is the case details are given. Where extra information is provided about claimants (e.g. widow, minor) these details have also been given.

For more information about these claims click on Compensation History to read a description by Guy Grannum.

Hi bimjim,

maybe it's me, but the link doesn't appear to be working. :(

If I don't get to speak with you again before Christmas, Seasons Greetings to you.

Regards, Rosaline

I guess they closed it down... I can't even open the root domain by itself.

Sorry, beyond my control.

Geraldine Lane, the person responsible for publishing that info, died and I assume someone decided to take the web site down.

But obviously someone else thought it worthwhile, because as indicated it is back up again.

Works for me!!!

Best, Jim

I had found more info at
But it seems even that is down now (December, 2009).

Perhaps Geraldine Lane's heirs can't afford to keep it on line.

All of these sites are working OK and I've never known them to be down. For information they are maintained by Mary Gleadall.
