WOOD..Antigua, Possibly Jamaica

Postby crobinson » Sun Mar 30, 2008 10:18 pm

Looking for any connection to a Frederick K Wood. Was English, not sure
if born in England or the West Indies. Lived in Antigua in 1869, as that
is when his daughter Annie Maria Wood was born on June 9th, 1869. The
address on the Birth Certificate was English Harbor at that time. He was
a Watchmaker. Not sure if he died in New London, but it probably would
have been between 1881 & 1888.

Annie was my Great Grandmother. Annie's obit states she came to the US
with her parents around 1885. I do know she landed in New London, CT.
and there she stayed. She married George T Benham in 1888 and had 3
daughters, Grace, Florence and Emma. They all are buried at Cedar Grove
in NL.

Fredericks wife was Sophia Ladley, also English. Her Death certificate
states she-Sophia died in New London, Ct on May 19, 1888, and was widowed at this time....pg. 53 N.L.Clerks office. Her death was one month after her daughters marriage. I have not found where she is buried.

Sophias father was James Laidley, mother was Maria both both English .

Sophias death certificate states she was also born in Antigua approximately 1839, as she was 49 yrs old when she died. Annie would have been 20 in June of 1888.

My only living uncle...age 96 recently told me his grandmother said she was from Jamaica..and her father worked as an overseer for the crown. First I heard of this.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
