CARTY, DRAKE, LONGFORD - Barbados, St. Croix, Ireland

Postby thomascarty » Thu Aug 20, 2015 7:00 pm

I am from Ireland, and while researching one notorius member of my mothers family who was a plantation agent in Barbados, I was told of the Longford connections to St. Croix, an island I never had heard of before.

Im interested in the CARTY name - where did it come from in Ireland (are they the Cartys of Sligo, or the ones of Ballinalee / St. Johnstown), how did plantations and geographic points such as Cartys Point get named after them, and how many are there today? We are of Ballinalee.

Are they Catholic or Anglican? At which point did they change faiths?

Im interested in the placenames GRANARD, LONGFORD, CORN HILL, CARTYS, MADAME CARTYS, ANALLY as to what families gave them the name.

When I know how it ties in with North Longford, and we understand our part in this shameful slave trade, its my intention to campaign for an official apology, for what its worth, for the part Irish people, both Anglo, Scot and Gael, played in this, and to get the history written down so we can better understand the history from which we all have came.

I've blogged on it here at Writings in Rhyme
