How many users have done a DNA test?

Post by TriniRoots » Sat May 06, 2017 2:54 pm

I have tested at AncestryDNA, FTDNA, and will soon test at 23andMe.

I started with FTDNA back in the National Genographic Project and advanced the markers in time to the maximum 111, also did the FTDNA FamilyFinder test. I completed the 23andMe test about 3 years ago, and submitted the AncestryDNA kit just two weeks ago (I don't trust the Ancestry cut-throat business people).

Have you also uploaded your data to GEDmatch? Do you have Caribbean roots? My Caribbean roots are primarily from Trinidad.

Been there, done all of that, have not had a single string match in the about 15 years I have been doing this. But my roots are Barbados and a bit unusual, brick wall about 1769 and not much trace of relatives apart from the direct line I already have going back.

No reason you would not find matches, you just have to keep on searching.

I have done the Ancestry DNA test and have managed to solve one of my brick walls, as a result. Having said that, I had already found the likely relatives and asked them to take the test which they did. I've got 167 pages of "relatives", but most are too distant to figure out the relationship. I'd say it was worth every penny just to solve the one family mystery.

I've done most of the services but very few of my matches are from my island roots. We need more people with Caribbean roots to take the tests. The segment is woefully underrepresented.

I encourage everyone to upload their data to GEDmatch if you have not done so already. It is free and it allows you to search for matches at other testing services.

I did the DNA test with Ancestry as did my brother, cousin and his son.

We were able to match with family of my grandmother Alice Carrington and her sister Martha Soden and Francena, but we have been unable to find a link for Francena's father.

I would be very interested in anyone who has Francena in their tree or the mother who was Marion Marmion Marshall.

Thanks

I first tested with 23AndMe, then with FTDNA, and finally with Ancestry when they started offering tests to Canadians.

I have tested on FTDNA and found it somewhat helpful I would recommend it.

I have done Ancestry and have grown family tree of over 1600 relatives. I have over 300 cousins to connect with, but not all DNA participants build their trees. Used info suggested from this site and I have found many Stanley’s but have found no genetic ties with them. I will have to check with older members of the family to see if I can dig up more information.

I've done Ancestry and Living DNA. Uploaded to Family Tree DNA, GED Match, My Heritage, etc.

Many known cousins, many distant cousins, no real surprises, yet, like others, I find a problem with the models they are using having a blind side pertaining to colonial West Indies.

There are a variety of reasons - and I'm not sure it is a simple task to correct - but in effect what goes "across the line" from Europe in 1628+ is not recorded again until it pops out in mainland New World or back in Europe. The diverse and active population (voluntary and not) which moved around the Atlantic world is really not represented.

If the subjects were resident of the islands during this time, and merely shifted back and forth for education, business military etc they do not form a sample population in the current DNA models as do the African/Euro populations, although perhaps they would be somewhat better represented if it occurred to anyone to form a West Indies DNA database... I dont know with any certainty that anyone is even thinking of it.
