HMY Britannia alongside in Montreal. HMS Ulster was on other side of jetty. This photo was taken on Ulster's arrival back in Devonport in October 1959 by a Daily Sketch Photographer and made the headline in newspaper (gone missing) and reporters pestered the three sisters from the day they arrived in Guzz [Devonport]. They were booked in at the Continental Hotel (back of the Drake Cinema)
On the left is Don "Pete" Finch and May - Centre is Colin "Farmer" Plowright and Marie -far right (a stand in?) and Myrtle (Mays twin sister) on the bagpipes is PO REL Forbes.
Colin and Marie met for the first time that day, but had been pen pals for six months, due to Cupid (Pete Finch). Colin and Pete married their partners in the photograph the following year and are reaching their 45th anniversary this year. The photo's below show them as they are now, a bit more aged but still fighting.
My own personal feelings to the Ulster, is to thank her for the wonderful time and the great friends I made onboard, it was a very happy ship and a great commission. Since leaving the ship both Peter and myself and our families have taken some hard knocks, but so have most people, I am very thankful to have such a lovely family and great mates to have kept me going.
