Battle of Plattsburgh
War 1812-1814187 years ago on September 11th, 1814 a conflict took place between British and American forces at Plattsburgh. It is interesting to note this is the last time a foreign power fought a battle on American soil.
Each year this battle is commemorated by the local people who honour both British & Americans killed during this action. Several Royal Navy, Royal Marines and British Army were killed. The dead included Captain George Downie Royal Navy, who lies buried in the local church yard. A very moving service is held each year which also marks the start of a Commemorative weekend. This year members of the Royal Naval Association Southern Ontario Branch and Royal Marine Association Ontario attended and were part of the ceremony. In pictures below Captain Downie's grave is saluted and manned with an honour guard of Royal Naval & United States Associations. In the background other members of the Royal Naval & Royal Marines Associations are fell in parading their Colours.
