H.M.S. BRAVE - Now for the true headdress story

H.M.S. Brave ships crest.

This crest inspired the  the Southern Ontario Branch of the Royal Naval Association to present a genuine Indian Headdress to the ship. Entire credit for the original idea goes to our first  Life Member and Founder, Shipmate David O’Flynn. Commander "Paddy" McKnight RN, XO of the Royal Yacht, who presented the Branch colours to us in 1984 went on to command HMS Brave and so the idea was born.

Deputy Chief Skye
gave a welcome speech first in his native language then English in the Royal Chapel at Six Nations after presentation and parade.  We were very honoured, as it is the first time the Chief had stepped inside a House of God.

A lesser Chief's Cap presented to H.M.S. Brave Chief Petty Officers Mess on a later occasion.  Both headdress's were returned to Six Nations after "Brave" decommissioned.  The Southern Ontario Branch, the local RNA, were very disappointed as they felt the headdresses should have been returned to the Branch.

Norrie Millen models headdress  on September 18, 2002, after 2 years of negotiations for its loan.

According to a MOD [N] spokesman, the Ministry was not aware that the headdress had been presented by the Southern Ontario Branch of the RNA. (Pictures above indicate differently!)

The webmaster sent links to this page and documentary evidence, including press cuttings and photographs to MOD [N] to back up our claim, but the letter was never answered!
The person responsible for shipping headdresses back to Six Nations, met with the webmaster in 2000 and said had he known of the RNA involvement
he would have returned them to us.

The headdress  is now back on long loan to the RNA Southern Ontario Branch and is on display in the Naval Club of Toronto on the RNA Wall.

Pictures below sent me by a later crew member who tried to maintain that the actual presentation of the headdress had been made in the United Kingdom.
