GAMEAU, KING - Haiti, Dominican Republic, "St Domingo"

Joseph Augustine Victor GAMEAU married Susannah KING in St Clement Danes, The Strand, London in 1800. The following notice appeared on Find My Past site, the digitised newspapers in the British Library 5 Sept. 1800 of "The Stamford Mercury":-

"Yesterday fortnight (ago) was married Mr GAMEAU late of St Domingo to Miss KING of Stilton (Huntingdonshire)."

At the time "St Domingo" may have implied anywhere within the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the DR combined).

Joseph was a publisher of books and kept a bookshop in Albermarle Street, Piccadilly. John Edwin GAMEAU the son born to him and Susannah, and baptised at St George, Hanover Square, Westminster, London in 1802 would seem to have been their only child. John Edwin married Rachel ADAMS at Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghhamshire in 1836. He was a barrister and lawyer who came to South Australia in 1850 with his wife and children. The name would appear to have ceased use in the UK thereafter.

Joseph's stock of foreign language books is mentioned in an article in "The Monthly Epitome" on the internet. However, he soon fell on hard times, and sued for bankruptcy, which is recorded in the British newspapers and documents in the National Archives, Kew (London).

Joseph would appear to have vanished from England at this time, probably back to continental Europe rather than to the Caribbean. Susannah returned to the village of her mother, Elizabeth KING in Stilton, conducted a boarding school, and raised her son John Edwin. Susannah GAMEAU died at Stilton in 1835.

Any mention of GAMEAU please.
