LYNCH family, Antigua

Postby jonnardee » Mon Dec 24, 2007 2:39 pm

I am trying to trace the family of Euphemia Lynch, born about 1775 in Antigua. She married Rev Thomas Scott in 1806 at Bledlow, UK. he became Rector at Wappenham, Northamptonshire. She is buried there.
I have searched the IGI and found only 3 Lynches in Antigua, namely Nathaniel, born about 1710, Nathaniel born about 1738 (likely to be father and son) and another Nicholas born about 1743. (maybe the first Nicholas died). The latter Nicholas was married to Mary Crump. The Crumps were apparantly a powerful family in the island. Possibly there is a direct line between these Lynches and Euphemia.
I would be very grateful to hear if anyone has any knowledge of this family.
best regards

I am looking for any Lynch connection to Barbados, where Francis, Anthony and Dominick Lynch ran a thriving business in Bridgetown. The earliest forebear I can find is Hamlet Mayers Lynch, b.ca.1775, who is "described" in records as a Free Mulatto. I suspect that he is a son of one of the Irish Bridgetown merchants and a black woman, but I constantly wonder if there will ever be any records of his parentage.

I just discovered that Anthony and Dominick Lynch of "Barbadoes" are listed as Executors of wills in Philadelphia about 1750 (you can find the web pages using Google). This is some 50 years before the Lynch family of Irish merchants disappeared from Barbados, so that is a reasonable possibility for a location where they went to. Clearly there were some kinds of connections between that family and Philly.

Other Lynch names turn up in New York, but I can't find a Barbados connection in any of those entries, and in fact the Ellis Island records point towards the New York Irish Lynch's coming direct from Ireland - though there could be a family connection from back there.

Another source of Irish names I found in Barbados was in the book "Irish-American Trade 1660-1783", available through AbeBooks.com for a reasonable price (you can also read some pages on GoogleBooks.com). It has an Index Nominum, which helps when searching for relatives, and the book "Migration and the origins of the English Atlantic world" is a very interesting read of practices and conditions on the ground when our ancestors arrived in the Colonies.
