OWENS, William Grannum 1780-1832 - Barbados

Postby jambo » Thu Mar 14, 2013 12:20 am

I have been trying to get information on William Grannum Owens and his family but seem to have hit a brick wall. I beleive his parents to be John OWENS and his 1st wife Margaret BENJAMIN. John OWENS married again in 1783 to Margaret Wright Pennington. William married Anna Scrivens in 1801 in Barbados and they had at least one son, John W OWENS born 1815. William owned property on Baxter's Road and Mason Hall Street.

If anyone can help at all with information on my family it would be very much appreciated.

From the IGI... you need to examine them and make your own decisions - some of these may not be yours!!!

Thank you for this information - it helps to verify what I already have. Do you know of anywhere that carries data from later christenings and also marriages and burials?

Perhaps the six books in the set called "Barbados Records" by Joanne Macree Sanders, but all of those end about 1800. I checked my books of Caribbeana, no entries for your first names. And no Owens in the "Genealogies of Barbados Families". Both Hottens are 1600-1700, out of your time frame.

If you want to connect with a researcher in Barbados I can recommend a professional there who is reliable and reasonable (let me know).

Best wishes,

Thank you for your suggestions, Jim. I will try and get a bit more information before deciding on a researcher.

Thanks again

Often middlenames were the mother's maiden name or chosen to honour another family member. My Grannums lived in St Thomas in the 1700s.

I haven't placed William Grannum Owens in my family tree. I don't have any Owens or Benjamins so I don't know if there is a connection - maybe they were friends.

I have a database from Ernest Wiltshire. I can't copy it but have extracted some information that may help. He uses a vast number of sources which he links together as a huge Barbadian family tree. The database I have is from 2007 and so he may have updated it since.

Margaret Benjamin and John Owens married on 15 November 1776 in St. James, Barbados B.W.I..

John Owens was born circa September 1754 in St. Thomas, Barbados B.W.I. to Abel Owens and Mrs Alice Owens.

It is worth dipping into familysearch from time to time as they are indexing Barbadian burials and they have digitised some of the Barbados registers - for example you can see a digital copy of William Grannum Owen's burial entry in November 1832: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... cc=1923399 (you need to be registered and signed in to see these digital images - some images can only be seen in their family history centers).

I thought that you could browse some of their registers . but I can't figure out how to do this - I'll need to persevere

You need to bear in mind that the church registers available through the LDS and in the archives and register office are copies made from 1850s. Also not all registers survived to be copied. Originals where they survive may be with the church / chapel.

As your family resided in Barbados between 1817 and 1834 you should check out the slave registers as they may have been slave holders and there may be some additional information. The Barbados slave registers are available on Ancestry - they are free but you need to be registered. If they were slave holders they may have been awarded compensation in 1834 under the emanicipation act - the index for claims published in 1838 is . at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs - John Owens (10 slaves) and Philip Owens (1 slave) are listed.

Hi

Thank you for your information. I did find OWENS on the Slave Registers but unfortunately did not get a plantation name or any real information. I am checking out the latest scans from Family Search - thank you for the suggestion, I did not know they were available to browse. I will keep looking through them and hope that more records may become available.

Thanks again
