RICHMOND, HANCOCK, JAMES, ST JOUR, DE GUISE – St Lucia, Castries

Ray Smith. My wife's father Conrad Richmond was born in Castries St Lucia in May 1932 and I am trying to trace his ancestors. I've been told family reminiscences which refer to ancestors and family lines with surnames Richmond, De Guise, Hancock and James all from St Lucia dating back to the mid 1870s. What I'm hoping to find is some documentary or third-party evidence to confirm what I've got and to be able to trace the lines further back.

Key individuals I have some information on include:

Conrad Rudy Joseph RICHMOND b. 12 May 1932 Castries, St Lucia, d. 25 Mar 2008 Kings College Hospital, London (brother Denis Roland RICMOND and 2 sisters, Joyce RICHMOND and Charlotte Teresa Delia RICHMOND)

Parents;

Oliver Richard RICHMOND b. 4 Apr 1900 Castries, St Lucia, d. 6 Jul 1962 Jamaica. Accountant. Customs clerk to District Officer of Micoud and Dennery. Chief Clerk, Audit Office Castries, Prior to the 1948 fire, was acting Colonial Treasurer and sat on several governing bodies of the Government, the Legislative Council Executive and Finance Committees Retired from position of Examiner of Accounts in Grenada at age 49. Joined Geest Industries as their Chief Accountant or Auditor.

Gladys Lucie Thebelle HANCOCK b 6 Feb 1904 Soufriere, St Lucia, d. 15 Mar 1976 Baddesley Ensor, Warwickshire

Father’s Parents;

James Charles RICHMOND, b. about 1875 (father DE RICHEMOND, mother Carmelise DE GUISE, sister Therese DE RICHEMOND)

Pommone ST JOUR (father ST JOUR, sister Lilly ST JOUR and brother Delandro ST JOUR))

Mother’s Parents;

James HANCOCK

Claire Phyotte JAMES (father St. Ange JAMES b. France, grandfather DE JACQUES, mother Charlotte, 4 brothers Philip, Augustin, Raymond and George. Ran the Estate called 'Aux Etangs' in Soufriere, which she had inherited on the death of her parents, Mere Charlotte & St. Ange James, and she relied on one of her brothers, Raymond, to help her handle the estates. She had also inherited a large home in the town of Soufriere.)

Hope someone can help.

Just this week a friend showed me a recent picture of Delia (Connie's sister). She lives in an assisted living home near Vancouver, Canada. Joycie also lives in Canada but I do not exactly were she is. I would be willing to e-mail a copy of Delia's picture.

Hello CEBFW

I’ve spoken to my wife Donna [Connie Richmond’s eldest daughter] and she was thrilled to hear that you had been in contact.

Her mother [Connie’s widow Rita Richmond] maintains close contact with Joyce “Joycie” O’Keefe [Connie’s sister, living in Keswick, Ontario, Canada; married to but now widowed from John O’Keefe] , and in fact visited last year.

Although Rita hasn’t seen Delia in a number of years and had sort of lost track of her, she does speak to her now and then and sends the odd parcel, gifts and cards to her in Canada. But a snap of her would be most appreciated. BIMJIM has posted how you can attach the photo to a Private Message.

Looking forward to hearing from you

It’s fascinating to hear some of the stuff you’ve put on the website and it would be great to know if by chance our paths may have crossed, or in fact we know you. Were you at Connie’s funeral in Croydon in 2007? Connie and Rita had a wide circle of long standing friends from St Lucia and the Caribbean from when Connie first came to England in the late 1950’s that grew larger the longer they lived around the Thornton Heath and Croydon areas. The numbers have thinned. And time has taken its toll. Memories gone forever or just dimmed. In fact Donna remembers a chap called Raymond Volney who had come to UK to study in the mid to late 1970’s. I think “Irish Newcomer” and you mentioned the surname Volney in an exchange of earlier postings. And you mentioned St Jour.

Whatever your connection we have, or not, Donna and I would be most grateful to hear anything else you may know or pick up on the Connie’s wider family, the St Lucia community and friends and people he may have known, or any links or hints or leads about his more distant ancestry through the Richmond, De Guise, St Jour, Hancock and James family lines.

Kind regards
Ray Smith
