SOBERS – Barbados, St. Peter and St. Andrew

Postby bajandon » Sat Jul 03, 2010 7:30 pm

I’m researching my Sobers family ancestors from Barbados. I'd like to obtain additional information on the following individuals:

  • Samuel William Sober, born abt. 1820 (location Unknown)
  • John William Sober, born 1842 in St. Peter
  • James Edward Sobers, born 1863 in St. Peter
  • James Augustus Sobers, born 1884 in St. Andrew
  • Elverton Sobers, born 1887 in St. Andrew
  • William Sobers, born 1894 in St. Andrew

I'm particularly interested in more info on Elverton and William Sobers.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Don,

Unable to provide any information on Elverton and William Sobers. However, my great grandfather was a Samuel Sobers, who immigrated from Barbados to British Guiana. My understanding he was a stevedore and at one point a superintendent of prisons in Georgetown. I am interested in Samuel, because my grandmother, Iris Muriel Sobers came to the United States in 1923 and lived with her half sister, Marion Sobers and lived in Philadelphia.

I'm not sure if that's the same Samuel Sobers. May I ask how Elverton and William Sobers related to you.

Wish you success in your search.

Sincerely,

Carmen I. Sanchez

Hi Carmen,

You're looking at four generations of Sober/Sobers. The last generation contains 3 brothers; James, Elverton and William. (Check out the birth dates.) James was my great grandfather. I don't have any info on his brothers, other than their baptism records.

I'm assuming that my Samuel is not your Samuel. My Samuel is probably too old to be your great grandfather. Also, since four generations were born in Barbados, it's unlikely that my Samuel immigrated to British Guiana.

Too bad though. It would have been great to have uncovered more of the family story.

I checked the IGI - International Genealogical Index - and found these results for you. You can check them yourself and get more info by clicking on the names using the link below (please see my note attached to the link).

Sorry, no Elverton (or the famous Everton) listed, but the Mormons do not publish data for the last 100 years or so.

You can find the IGI here...
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/ ... ch_IGI.asp

Note: Just enter ONLY the surname (Sobers) and then select the Region as Caribbean Islands (or South America for the Guyana entries below).

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the information! Number 160 is one of my guys. His 1884 marriage record is spelled Sobers with an 's'. However, his 1863 baptism record is spelled Sober without the 's'. All the family records that I've uncovered before 1863 are spelled Sober.

I had the good fortune of being able to visit the Barbados Department of Archives in 1997 and in 1998. The first summer, all of the records (including the indexes) were only in the books. The second summer, the indexes had been microfilmed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The actual records were still in the books. A few years later the records you searched began to show up on FamilySearch.org. The more recent records that I listed, I found in the Archives. The earlier records, I found after the data was added to the Web site. You can find a more detailed look at what I actually found at the following URL: http://greatships.dlhjr.com/sobers.html

I have all the data on James Augustus Sobers (my great grandfather) and his descendents. But I don't have any information on the descendents of his two brothers, Elverton and William. It's easy to search backwards, but almost impossible to search forward. Additionally, like you mentioned, the cutoff for the records on FamilySearch.org is around 1885. What I need now is a relative.

Thanks again for your help! Much appreciated.

I've been doing this - intensively, on a daily basis - for over a decade, and I'm still learning useful and vital things.

Your comment about Sober and Sobers prompted me to go back and search the name Sober, and - to my surprise - I found another 740 records for that name - there were only about 200 for Sobers.

I say "to my surprise" because I know about the Soundex invention of the same Mormons, and that they use it in the IGI. I did NOT realise that the names Sober and Sobers do not have the same Soundex number, despite the loss of just that single letter.

So it's a good thing I usually provide people with the IGI link... I hope you managed to finds what you needed in spite of my contribution!!

I do have another possible source of info here, but it's not all that accurate and would need confirmation... please tell me if any of these names interest you, and I will send you what details I have...

Hi Jim,

Despite the fact that I caught the name change while doing my research, I didn't realize the Soundex code was different either.

Reviewing your new list, none of the names fit the folks I found so far. Additionally, judging by the dates of those individuals, they are most likely Sobers of European descent. Mine are of African descent. That's why the roots of my tree stop around 1820. The last concrete record I could find was a baptism record for John William Sober in 1842. It lists his parents as being Samuel William Sober and Sally Patience. There births would be before slavery ended in Barbados. To date, I haven't found anything in the Slave Schedules to provide me with additional information.

But thanks for trying! I've been working it for a while.

these are great ideas.. i'll have to printout and go over. just don't know how to trace my grandmother, Iris Sobers (her maiden name)..I heard from an organization that searches barbados records and their contact person stated to me, that british guiana records are very difficult to search.......however, I appreciate the information and I have seen that site regarding the william sobers. had exchanged emails with the gentleman that posted the site.

Jim,

You made me curious. I went back and took a look at the Soundex Codes for Sober (S160) and Sobers (S162). From Wikipedia, "The Soundex code for a name consists of a letter followed by three numerical digits: the letter is the first letter of the name, and the digits encode the remaining consonants."

Sober (S160) only has two consonants after the initial 'S'. So the third digit defaults to zero.
Sobers (S162) has three consonants after the initial 'S'. So the third digit is a 2.

Just a quirky thing to be aware of when you have short surnames.

See the following URL for the full details of how the code is constructed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundex

cariris16...

Check the Useful Links section for links to Guyana sources. There is a very organised genealogy association there which may be able to help you.

Don't forget, too, to select "South America" region in the IGI to search Guyana... unlike CARICOM, the IGI does not see Guyana as part of the Caribbean.

For research in Barbados, I am in touch with someone who is intelligent, resourceful, reliable and reasonable - a very difficult combination to come across nowadays!!

And if anyone comes across good researchers in any Caribbean location (including Guyana, Suriname, anywhere considered Caribbean or on the Caribbean basin), please ask them to contact me. I provide FREE listings and FREE SPAM-free contact forms for the initial connection. I also ask NO commissions, just trying to help people climb their family tree.

Best,
Jim Lynch
