Newspapers Turks and Caicos

Postby caquart » Sun Feb 11, 2007 5:11 am

Hi there,

I notice that the national library of Jamaica has the following in its nineteenth century newspaper collection for the Turks and Caicos:

Turk and Caicos Islands

The Turks Island Gazette and Commercial Reporter
The Royal Standard and Gazette of the Turks and Caicos Islands
The Turks Islands

I don't know if they offer inter-library loans. Here is their website http://www.nlj.org.jm/

You could also check the British Library http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/newspapers/results.asp I'm sure they do interlibrary loans if what they have is on microfilm. Here is what they have for the Turks and Caicos:

Grand Turk; Turks and Caicos Islands

Conch News 1971 to date

Royal Standard and Gazette of the Turks and Caicos Islands (The)
1858-1888

The oldest Bahamian newspaper is the Bahama Gazette , which started in 1784 and continued into the early 19th century. It was microfilmed by the University of Florida in (I think) the 1950s, and various libraries have sets; the British Library newspaper library in London certainly does, but I doubt you'd get it on inter-library loan.
Outside the Bahamas, Florida is probably the best place for Bahamian resources on the west side of the Atlantic.

Btw, & forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, if you're based in the Bahamas, the Department of Archives in Nassau is a good place to start for Bahamian genealogy.
