1995 was long before Emancipation. My understanding is that the slave owners in Antigua were a bit harsher than most other islands, so if he was non-white there is little chance he would have had a formal education.

If he was white, the likelihood is one of two paths, either sent away to England to school/university or stay at home and learn how to run the estate/s.

I am sure there are many other options apart from these two, but these are probably the most common.
