WORRILL - St. Thomas, Dominican Republic

Postby janette-jones » Mon Dec 28, 2015 2:16 pm

I'm looking for any connection to Eldina Worrill. All I know about my grandmother is that she was raised by her aunt on her fathers side. The aunts last name Joseph; died 1938; brought my grandmother to San Pedro, DR.

Do you know when she died? What part of DR did she live? Other family members of hers? Or any other information about her you can give me. I would appreciate very much. Thank you. :D

I don't have her exact year of death I would assume it would be after 1933 because my mother was born in 1933. Doris Joseph would have lived in San Pedro de Macoris where my mother is from. I can get more details in a couple of weeks when I go visit my mother in NYC.

Wow, interesting!! My Ms Joseph move to Pedro de Macoris from St Thomas with my grandmother. My grandmother's mother died giving birth to her. She, my grandma, was raised by Ms Joseph who was the sister of her father. I'm hoping this is her. Thank you.

I'm on Ancestry. I do know of several other Dominican Joseph's too. So it's a popular name for those descendants from the English speaking Caribbean who came to DR in the late 1800s to work the sugar cane fields. Do some research on the "Cocolos" of Dominican Republic to get a deeper historical perspective on the migration. My father side of the family are from St Croix but they came to DR in the late 1800s

I also just received my Ancestry DNA so you can find me on there under "Jeannette Abrahamson".

Ok, so then, we don't share dna. Hmmm!

But thank you so much for the info on cocolos. I have heard the term before recently. I looked into it and found a couple of books, I will continue to research this. You've been a big help on finding my great grandmother/great aunt. Thank you.
