FRANCIS, CAINES - St. Kitts, USVI

Postby Joseph » Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:26 pm

My Great Grandmother Louisa Caines had married a mulatto in the British Navy, a person named Mr. Francis.

Ma, as we used to call her, had 13 children. I don’t know if all the children were fathered by Mr. Francis. Ma had a sister I was told who lived in Gibbons Hill name Eunice Caines. Ma and Eunice mother name was Renee Caines.

Ma is related to the Caines in Backstreet and Station Street, Dieppe Bay. Ma, Louisa Francis, our Great Grandmother always lived in Dieppe Bay.

I was able to connect with many of my family in St. Kitts, the US Virgin Islands and America through Facebook, but I am seeking any additional information - especially on those in England and Santo Domingo.

Thank you.

Joseph,

My great-grandmother was named Ethel Evangeline Challenger (her mother was Susannah Jane Barnes) from St. kitts (Saddlers area). Susannah's mother was supposedly named Dorothy Cairnes, but I suppose it could have been Caines as well since that is similar.

My great-grandmother emigrated to St. Croix from St. Kitts and stayed there the remainder of her life.

Can you tell me any more information about the Caines line in St. Kitts? Have you heard of the Dorothy Caines before, or do you know of any connections to the surnames Barnes and Challenger?

Other than Susannah's parents' names, we don't know anything about her family.

Thanks,

Ashley

I too, am looking for some lineage by way of St. Kitts. My great-great grandmother's name was Ella Challenger (possibly born in 1874?) and she emigrated to St. Croix in 1917/1920. Do you know any siblings of your GGGM? Is it possible they are sisters? Ella Challenger married (maybe) Robert Barnes and one of their children was Thomas Barnes, who was my great-grandfather.

Hi,
I don't know much about the Caines and Challengers, but if we keep posting and sharing information I am sure we'll get our questions answered.
