What names are you looking for in French St. Martin? Please give me full names, dates if possible, and relationships and I'll see if I can help. Probably can't help if they were Catholic as I don't have those records.

Check for the Martinique archives website. The staff does respond to queries, especially names of early settlers

Can you be more specific about the Martinique Archives website? Do you know the URL?

Have a look at the French Archives for their overseas dependencies at http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/

1. Click on Etat Civil - Registres numerises
2.Choose your territory from the drop down list
3. Choose a community and the tpye of register - table annuelle and decennale are indexes - go from there.

Everything is free.

Hope this helps,

Cathy

Hi, Cathy...

My French is not that great any more, especially not on forms like this.

So can I ask for a few minutes of your time, please, to search the Guadeloupe records for a Free Negro woman with the name of MINIFRED?

I have no last name, but she appears in Barbados in 1804 as a "Free Negro Woman" as the partner of my ancestor and mother of his children. He was born in 1769, is "described" as a Free Mulatto", and so far neither one have any records that we can find (apart from an abstract of his will).

If it helps, she would have a probable birth date between 1769 and 1786. There was exchange of slaves between the probable owners in Barbados and Guadeloupe about that time (possibly a purchase of family members, a practice which seems to run in this family), so I suspect she may have come from there, or from Martinique, either as a free person or as a slave.

Much appreciated...

Jim Lynch

Hi Jim,

Do you have an idea which community she might have come from? Is there a surname? There are many baptisms without surnames so that is not an issue, but just checking. I'd be happy to have a look for you.

All I have from the first record of her in 1804 is the name Minifred Lynch. Since she was Hamlet Lynch's partner (or wife) I have no other info.

And I am not sure she came from Guadeloupe or Martinique, it is just that there were mentions of an officer (from Barbados) named Lynch who was in Guadeloupe for a while, and in connection with him there were slaves transferred from there to Barbados whose names coincided with Lynch family members.

Sorry... and thanks.
