I have found the following very useful for Jamaican genealogy:

1. www.newspaperarchive.com - well worth the subscription fee. The Jamaica Gleaner from 1834 is available and fully searchable. It has been a treasure trove.

It is possible to request that newspaperarchive.com acquire other papers, which I have done. The Jamaica National Library site has a list of eighteenth and nineteenth century newspapers that they have in their collection (including papers from all over the Caribbean), so I used that list to make my requests. I assume that the more people that make requests, the more likely they will try to acquire the papers.

2. www.jamaicanfamilysearch.com - also has a subsription fee.

3. Donald Lindos CD on Jamaica Genealogy available at www.discoverjamaica.com/shop/genealogy

4. If you are just getting going, have a look at www.rootsweb.com/~jamwgw/ The coordinator, Madeleine Mitchell, has a lot of very useful information on where to look and how to get started. She's got a great little book called "Jamaican Ancestry: How to find out More". It is available at www.HeritageBooks.com

5. Ships' passenger lists at www.ellisisland.org (free) and ancestry.com
