WILLIAMS - Antigua (?)

Postby Keishanae » Sun Apr 10, 2016 2:20 pm

I'm trying to get some info on my grandfather Peter Williams was born in 1932 I believe in Antigua - I was told that he's from Antigua, however as a small child his family relocated him to Brooklyn New York (still not sure if he was born in Antigua or US).

He was married to my grandmother but they had separated. All I know is he was born March 17th 1932 - again not sure if it was Antigua or Brooklyn NY - and died May 20th 1989 Brooklyn New York.

I was told that his parent was a seamstress with a shop in Brooklyn New York back in the thirties to the mid-fifties. My mother and her siblings told me that he had a heavy west indian accent but they don't remember him because the last time they saw him was when they were under 2 years old

If anybody has any information on how I can go about this or where to go it'll be appreciated thank you.

Also I have a SS#, but am unable to locate a Birth Certificate. Working on getting a Death Certificate.

From the Mormons' (free) International Genealogical Index...
http://familysearch.org/

I did not find any Peter Williams born in Antigua of that year, but if you look at this link you will see that I checked the box "Match all exactly", as well as set the Filters for Birth Year 1932 and Death Year 1989.

https://familysearch.org/search/record/ ... =1900~1980

Here is the one result which matches your specifications...

Thanks
I know the first 1 is him but I'm unable to find any other info on him. Or his family I checked the census bureau on ancestry.com and unable to find a peter Williams born or lived in Brooklyn NY in 1932 listed as black. So I'm confused on where to go 2 next. City of NY has a death Certificate of him but unable to locate a birth Certificate. Both my Mother and Grandmother stated he was an antigan.
Thanks again for all your help.

It may be worth asking a question on the Facebook Group I started - there are Groups for most of the islands, but not for Antigua, so I started one.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/6298332 ... 7/?fref=ts

Other than that, the Governor-General of Antigua is a local - and a Williams, with his forebears from Antigua. I doubt the Antigua Archives would help, and you would need someone one the ground to go to the Registrar to ask about Births. I suggest you see if you can get someone there to do that for you.

** Tip: NEVER send money to any island government with an enquiry about genealogy, the cash disappears and the superiors don't want to know.

Best wishes...
