Scotland to Jamaica and New Zealand!

Postby Tim Hall » Fri Apr 05, 2013 3:09 pm

I was recently surprised to learn that my Scottish ancestors left their small town in Scotland (Croy) and settled in or near Hanover, Jamaica for a few years in the 1820s (my great-great-grandmother was born there, along with her next youngest sister), subsequently returning to Scotland where the rest of their children were born. In visiting the Caribbean Surname Index site, I found someone else had recently posted, seeking to learn about my great-great-grandmother's unusual birthplace as noted in the Scottish census records. When I saw that the poster was from New Zealand, I soon realized he was connected to the New Zealand side of our family that we had lost touch with 70 years ago (the one cousin we knew had his plane go down in WW II).
