Re: BURKE, ASHBY, VALVERDE - Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada

I could be wrong but I don't believe Keilings/Keelings were Jewish. There are occurrences of early baptisms and marriages in the Anglican Church that to my mind rule out that possibility. Also, the list of Jewish Deaths in Early Barbados published at familysearch.org has no instances I can find of t...

Re: George BRIAR - Ships Captain 1830 onwards

There is an area in Barbados called "Briar Hall" in the parish of Christ Church. I have always wondered about the origins of the name. If you check familysearch.org you will find only one record of a marriage in 1780 in the parish of St. Thomas between a William Briar and a Elizabeth Hicks...

Re: BURKE, ASHBY, VALVERDE - Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada

We probably share a common ancestor in the Valverde line. I reckon the first Valverde's in Barbados were Portuguese Jews probably out of Brazil. Some became Quakers and by the 1800's had become Anglican. That's why I think there are so many blanks in the parochial records. There is also a Sarah Valv...

Re: Plantation owners in MARTINIQUE and GUADELOUPE

Look for old maps of Martinique and Guadeloupe.

Chances are the names will be on them

Re: BURKE, ASHBY, VALVERDE - Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada

I have a Louisa Keiling Grell who died in 1934 and is buried at Westbury Cemetery, age 90, probably her mother and the Louisa Keiling [Grell] Seon referred to above. That makes her birth in 1844. Her place of birth is given as Barbados. I am going to guess at this stage that Louisa Keiling Seon marr...

Re: BURKE, ASHBY, VALVERDE - Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada

I suspect "Auntie Nen" was her nickname but her full name was Louise Ananet Munier Grell who died in 1966 at the age of 96, a spinster.

Re: BURKE, ASHBY, VALVERDE - Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada

I recall an "Auntie Nen" Grell and I think a sister who were friendly with my Grandmother and I often met at her house when I was a boy.

That would probably be late 50's early 60's.

Re: BURKE, ASHBY, VALVERDE - Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada

Robert Cooper Ashby (1776?-1839) produced 10 children with Mary Ann who adopted his surname. The first child she baptized (no father mentioned) she is described as Mary Ann, Mulatto Slave of Robert Cooper Ashby. I reckon he was their father because of oral family tradition ... my aunt could name eac...

Re: MAHON, GASKIN - Barbados, Canada

The Queree papers at the Archives are really good on historical land ownership. Pegwell was originally known as Elridge. Here is what they have on Elridge Eldridge – Pegwell, Christ Church – NE of Almshouse 1674 Hooper 1680 Crispine Hooper, 100 ac 1721 Beckles 1727 84/22 Hon. Thomas Beckles of Chris...
