Ongoing preservation by re-publishing:
CanDoo Creative Concepts finds rare books in the subject of Caribbean genealogy and re-publishes them to a high quality. See their Projects page for the latest find, what is available now and what may be available in the future. You may also request that specific books be re-published.

Here are links to current stock or possible availability: VL Oliver's "History of Antigua", "Old Barbados Newspapers", VL Oliver's "Caribbeana".
The next Project (in progress) is the 1791 Jamaica Almanack.

Accommodations Suggestions for the St. John's area
Heather Nielsen, April 1999 : If one wants to be in St. John's to do research in Antigua, the Heritage Quay Hotel (Heritage Quay, 268-462-1247 & 8), right on the wharf at Heritage Quay, is excellent. Also for boat to Montserrat which seems to be the only island to which one can travel by boat. Otherwise, plane. Double room (2 x 4'6" beds) with shower plus kitchenette, table and lounge suite, TV and phone costs U$130.00 per day. Rooms overlooking the harbour are probably the best, 29, 30 and 31. Those rooms under those numbers are on the first floor. There is a ground floor plus two above. NO ELEVATORS. Very convenient - can walk everywhere in St. Johns. There is a small "cafe" attached for breakfast and light meals but, as one is in the heart of things, food is no problem because the supermarket is 50 yards away and one could cook for oneself if need be. Having always stayed at Runaway Bay before and having to get into (and out of) town, this was perfect.

Jim Lynch, April, 1999
: I also recommend the Cortsland Hotel (Upper Gambles, 268-462-1395 & 0705); it's not in town, but walking distance to the Archive and St. John's. Joe Mike's Hotel (Nevis Street 268-462-1142) is an upstairs accommodation in the centre of town might be cheaper (no elevators there either). While in St. John's, see if the Museum (north of Scotia Bank) has any reference books that might be of interest - I do know they have a set of Oliver's "History of Antigua".

Ample parking facilities.

The BMHS charges about BD$20 (US$10) a day for access to the Library for research purposes.. If you will be researching there more than two days it is cheaper to buy a Membership in the Society - and receive the free books and mailed newsletter thrown in as well.

There are usually people in the Library (retired folks) who are very knowledgeable about what is available. Researchers are not allowed to roam the (small) Library - volunteers must retrieve the desired books/documents for them, and the Librarian makes the photocopies as required, for which there is a charge of BD$0.86 (US$0.43) per page.

Research in the Museum's Library can be done at a distance. Write to (or fax) the attention of the Museum Librarian at the above address giving details of what you are looking for and what relevant details you have, and the Librarian will respond with a quotation for the cost of the research.

You may then make a decision as to whether to go forward with the research or not. If you do, you would send a bank draft payable to the "Barbados Museum and Historical Society" for the designated sum and the research would be performed on your behalf.

(For informational purposes, such research at the Museum Library is not expensive - it costs about BD$10 (US$5) an hour.)

JAMAICA ARCHIVES RESEARCH SERVICE - DESCRIPTION:
(Prices quoted have been updated to reflect increases in fuel and wire transfer costs)

DESCRIPTION: In association with Wayne Burnside a local researcher in Jamaica the following "research package" will be available for searches at the "Archives" in Spanish Town: For a fee of $60.00 the following records will be searched using one family surname (spelling variations are "O.K.")
supplied by you:

1) PROBATE INVENTORIES
2) PATENTS
3) LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION
4) LETTERS TESTAMENTARY

(SEE DOCUMENT DESCRIPTIONS BELOW).

The $60.00 fee is payable in advance whether or not any records are found and the cost of copies and postage is additional. The $60.00 fee will allow the return of (20) document references per name from any combination of the four types of documents researched; any references greater than (20) in number will be charged at the rate of US$1.00 per reference.

So if (50) references are returned for one name then the cost will be $60.00 (for 20 references) PLUS ($1.00 X 30) = $30 (for the additional 30 references) for a total cost of US$90.00. We will send you the additional 30 references on receipt of your check/money order for the added $30.00 charge.

Within 3-4 weeks you will be supplied with a list of the "given name and surnames" found and their "document reference numbers." We will then await your order for copies. (see below)

COPY CHARGES: The charge for copies will be based on "material" and "time" as follows:

MATERIAL COST: For those records which can be "xeroxed": the cost will be 75 cents per 8-1/2 X 11" sheet. For other records that cannot be "xeroxed" microfilming is an option: there is a "microfilm set-up roll charge" of $25.00 which will include a set number of pages (it will cover at least 15 pages) and postage to your address.

RESEARCHER TIME COST: Due to the amount of time needed to "access," "mark," "pay-for" and "follow-up" on the microfilm/copy order the following charges for "researcher time" will apply:

There will be a flat $25.00 fee per copy order plus a $5.00 per document charge in excess of (2) documents. So if you order copies of 10 documents, the "researcher time cost" will be $25.00 ("flat fee") PLUS $40.00 (2 documents 'free' and 8 documents at $5.00 each) OR $65.00.

Your total cost for copies of 10 documents would then be $90.00 ( $25.00 for material cost and $65.00 for researcher time). Payment for copies must be received in advance and allow 4-6 weeks for delivery of microfilm.

1) INVENTORIES: Inventories were performed for people who died, regardless of whether or not they left a will - they list interesting information, such as an approximate death date, name of estate administrator (possibly a spouse or next of kin), perishable items owned by the deceased (slaves, personal effects, furniture, etc, but NOT LAND), and net worth. These inventories run from 1675 to 1837. They can help to round out your genealogy picture.

2) PATENTS: Patents usually refer to land that was granted to early settlers of Jamaica but can also include such things as "naturalizations" as well. These patents run from 1662 to 1826. If the patent is for land it will list along with the date of the grant, the acreage and location of the land in Jamaica: this will also include the names of neighbours on whom the land bordered and sometimes on the nature of the land "commons", "forest", "ponds", etc.

3) LETTERS TESTAMENTARY: When a person died leaving a will, "Letters Testamentary" were issued to the executor/s granting him/her power to administer the estate including the performance of an inventory of the deceased's estate. These can give a clue as to the death date of an individual as they cite the date that the will was probated. Of course the names of the executors will always be given which may show a "next of kin" or a "close business or personal" associate. Of course they will also mention the parish of the deceased. They cover the period 1723 to 1822.

4) LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION: If a person died intestate (without leaving a will), Letters of Administration were granted to an individual (usually a spouse, kin, friend or business associate) which gave them power to administer the deceased's estate including the performance of an Inventory.

These letters of administration will give you a "ballpark" idea as to date of death since they show when the letter of administration was granted. Of course they will also mention the parish of the deceased. They cover the period 1715 to 1825.

Wills and probate in Jamaica (thanks to Edward Crawford for these notes!)

Original wills are today kept at the Island Record Office, part of the Registrar General's Department of Jamaica. Copies of proved wills for the past 100 years or so are kept at the Supreme Court, but these are primarily for the use of the legal profession.

Wills proved in Resident Magistrate's Court.
Wills proved in the Supreme Court of Judicature of Jamaica.

Some sources for information on early Jamaican wills:

  • Will index at the Registrar General's office. The (approximate) year of death and the parish of the testator's residence must be known to use this index effectively. The index gives the liber and folio numbers of the will record. Some of the will books have been recopied and the folio number in the index may no longer be valid unless it says old folio or new folio.
  • Indexes, compiled by Vere Langford Oliver and published in Caribbeana, to wills "which are on record in the Office of the Island Secretary, Jamaica, from 1663 to 1750".
    Caribbeana vols 1, 2, and 3: LDS FHLC film no. 0038848;
Caribbeana vol. 5: LDS FHLC film no. 0038849.
    [? Vol. 4]
    • The index for 1663-1700 is ordered by liber number, with several years in each liber; the names are not in alphabetical order. The index for 1731-1750 is alphabetically ordered within each year. The folio numbers are not given for these indexes.
  • Caribbeana also has an index to wills which were proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC), London, of testators who either held land in Jamaica or had PCC probate for reasons of social status. The volume and folio numbers from an entry in the Caribbeana index can be used to find, in the FHL catalog under England - Probate Records - Church of England - Province of Canterbury, the number of the film with the copy of the relevant PCC will.
  • Abstracts of Jamaica wills, 1625 - 1792. British Library Additional Ms 34184.
  • Lists compiled by the Jamaican historian C.E. Long. British Library Additional Ms 21931.
  • These lists cover the period 1661 - 1750 and are as follows:
  • List 1: 1661-1700, by liber, non-alphabetical, without folio number
  • List 2: 1700-1730, alphabetically, by year and liber, with folio number
  • List 3: 1731-1750, alphabetically, by year with liber and without folio number
  • Hints for tracing an Anglo-American pedigree in the old country: with a list of wills from 1700 to 1725 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, England, of testators living or dying in America and the West Indies by John Matthews. LDS FHLC film no. 1429855, item 14.
  • Testators of wills proved in Jamaica
  • The following lists are based on the microfilms, produced by the Genealogical Society of Utah, of wills and records of probate of the Supreme Court of Jamaica. The film numbers are those in the catalogue of the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • The microfilms are of documents of various periods, as follows:
    1937926; 1937927; 1937928; 1937929; 1937930.

(Bearing in mind that there was recent - and continuing - volcanic activity which erased the capital of Plymouth from human habitation through enormous rolling boulders and falling ash several meters thick:)

Information received 13 June, 1999:
"The birth and death records are still with the Court House. The Public Library holds some archival material which previously had been housed at Government House (in the cellar). This amounts to some 2270+ pieces including some bound volumes, some files and some very fragile documents. There is a card index of sorts to this collection. However, please remember there is no programme for the systematic transfer of official records of archival value to the Public Library and the collection would therefore not be comprehensive."

Information received 08 May, 2000:
"I just returned from Montserrat where I was able to research my family.
There are records of births and deaths and the marriage registry from 1863. Land records do not exist before 1980, which I think may be an error, but this is what the registry people tell me. Beatrice Allen, the librarian at the Montserrat Public Library might be able to put you in contact with someone who will page through the tomes for you."
