The Toronto Metro Reference Library (in Ontario, Canada) has an incredibly huge genealogy section on the fourth floor, diagonally across the Atrium from the elevators.

The TMRL is located one block north of Yonge and Bloor - the northern fringe of the downtown core and one of the two intersections of the two main Toronto subway lines.

Apart from all the other references there (including the Special Collection kept in an adjacent specially air-conditioned room), check out especially the series of Passenger Lists, Ledger-sized (double standard-page, about 17" x 22") books from 1 inch to 2 inches thick occupying about six shelf feet of space.

The Library has an ongoing subscription to this reference set which indexes alphabetically all passengers on all found lists, along with the people accompanying them, ages, origin and destination, in many cases their ages or approximate ages.

The first issue was 3 volumes, and there were between one and three issues per year after that.

** As noted above, the names are all indexed alphabetically. A bit of a monumental research, but well worth the effort and very likely to list someone you know emigrated to the West (includes lists for ships that sailed to the Caribbean and South America).

Highly reccommended.
